Quick Tips to Spruce Up your Summer Curb Appeal

Plant Flowers & Refresh Flower Beds

• Refresh flower beds with fresh dirt and add plant food or fertilizer as needed.
• Freshen up beds that could use some additional mulch or pine straw. We prefer a brown mulch or pine straw for a more natural look (rather than the black or red mulch options)
• Consider the amount of sun your flower beds & gardening areas receive and plant accordingly.

Plants that love shade:

• Impatiens - Available in a variety of bright colors, perfect for adding pops of color to shady areas of your yard.
• Astilbe - Feather flumes that bloom in a variety of colors that can add a nice texture and pop of color to your flower beds. They may attract bees & butterflies, and are a more deer resistant option.
• Ferns - Classic option for front porch hanging baskets to add a fresh pop of green in shady areas. Different varieties can add various texture to your front porch or garden beds.

Plants that love a mix of sun & shade:

• Hostas - Lovely option to help fill space in your flower beds, add some nice shades of green, or use a variety with interesting colors or patterns. They grow beautifully in shady areas that receive some morning or evening sun. Just know that if deer are known to frequent your yard, they may enjoy nibbling your hostas.
• Day Lillies - Another good option for adding bright summer color to your yard or landscaping. These are a taller option that can work well as a center option in containers.
• Hydrangeas - Iconic shrubs with white, blue, pink, & purple blooms. They may not produce blooms for the first couple of years after planted, but can last for years providing wonderful pops of color once they mature.

Plants that love full sun:

• Marigolds - Great for a pop of warm Summer color, and they grow well with other plants like tomatoes, helping to deter aphids & other tomato eating pests.
• Basil, Rosemary, Thyme, & Oregano - These are great options if you love having fresh herbs on hand to cook with. We like planting Basil with Marigolds & a smaller variety of tomatoes (some tomato plants can grow quite large) together in a container.
• Zinnias - Another wonderful option if you’re looking for pops of bright color in your garden or flower beds. Available in a variety of colors & FYI they will attract bees & butterflies.

Freshen Up your Front Porch

• Consider replacing, repairing, re-painting, or re-staining your front door if it looks worn or weathered.
• If you need a quick boost of summer color, consider adding some containers with summer blooming flowers or an herb garden for a porch that gets good sunlight.
• Check for damage to any beams, house numbers, door hardware, and decorative items & touch up or replace as needed.

Exterior Cleaning

• Finally, consider deep cleaning or power washing areas of your home’s exterior that could use some extra cleaning, especially siding, front porch, driveways & path ways. Removing dirt, grime, & stains from a good power wash can help give the exterior of your home a pristine clean look.
